The Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) on Sunday arrested a 27-year-old man for the murder of a college professor who was stabbed to death inside a local train at Malad railway station in Mumbai, officials said.
The accused has been identified as Omkar Shinde, a resident of Kurar village in Malad. Police said he was traveling in the same compartment as the victim, Alok Singh, when the incident occurred on Saturday night.
According to the GRP, the attack occurred around 5:40 p.m., when the train stopped at platform number one at Malad station. An argument allegedly broke out between Shinde and Singh over getting off the train, following which Shinde stabbed Singh on the left side of the abdomen.
Singh was rushed by other passengers to Shatabdi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

“The accused managed to flee from the spot, taking advantage of the strong avalanche on the platform. Although some passengers and GRP staff tried to catch him, he escaped into the crowd,” said a GRP officer.
Police registered a murder case and started scanning CCTV footage of the railway platform and its surroundings. “We tracked the movement of the accused through multiple CCTV cameras from Malad station to Western Express Highway. Based on technical evidence and human intelligence, he was captured in Kurar area late at night,” the officer said.
Shinde will be produced before a local court on Sunday, police said, adding that further investigation was underway to ascertain the exact motive behind the attack.
