Train stabbing victim: On his wife’s birthday, how a routine train ride turned fatal for a math teacher

Alok Singh, 32, a resident of Kurar Village in Malad (east), had been working as a teacher at NM College, Vile Parle, for the last two years. He had lived in Bad since he was little with his uncle Sunil Kumar Singh, retired BMC school teacher.

Singh studied up to class 10 at Gyanodaya Vidya Mandir High School and completed his HSC from Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari. He later pursued higher studies at the University of Mumbai, where he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He entered the teaching profession seven or eight years ago, starting his career at an international school in Andheri.

While teaching, Singh completed his BEd and passed the state government’s Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Before joining NM College, he worked as a teacher at a Malad-based college, teaching mathematics to students of classes 11 and 12. Last year, he was appointed as a permanent professor at NM College.

“He was selected in two colleges as a permanent professor in Thane and Vile Parle, but he preferred to work in NM College in Vile Parle and accepted the offer,” said a relative of Singh.

Singh’s father, Anil Kumar Singh, is part of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s security team and was in Delhi for preparations for the Republic Day parade when he was informed of his son’s death. Singh had gotten married two years ago and his wife is studying BEd.

On the day of the incident, Singh had planned a dinner with his wife on her birthday. He left the university shortly after his work day and told his colleagues that he was going out to dinner. His colleague Sudhir Trivedi, who lives in Nalasopara, accompanied him as they normally traveled together.

Singh’s father arrived in Mumbai on Sunday morning, while his younger brother, who lives in Lucknow, was expected to arrive later in the day, a relative said.

“I was immediately relieved and rushed here. The accused was caught and the defense minister assured me that he had spoken to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to ensure that strict action was taken in this case. If this was UP and a person working with the government was injured, the UP police would have killed the accused in the encounter,” Singh’s father said outside the Bhagawati Hospital morgue, where the body was kept for autopsy.

Anil Kumar Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, has been posted across the country as part of the Defense Minister’s security detail. His family remains in Lucknow, where his eldest son is also a government official.

“However, Alok always stayed here with my brother in Mumbai’s Kurar village in Malad. Staying with his uncle, he also became a teacher like him,” Anil Kumar Singh said, adding that his younger brother Sunil Kumar Singh had dropped out of a civic school.

Relatives said teaching ran in the family.
“All members of this family are well educated, most of them in the teaching profession, whether here in Mumbai or UP. It is impossible to believe that any of them could be involved in an altercation that could lead to a fatal attack,” said a family member.

The family also alleged that a delay in sending Singh to the hospital contributed to his death.

“He was attacked around 5.50pm but was not taken to the hospital until 7pm as GRP proposed life-saving procedures. His post-mortem report indicates that death was due to heavy blood loss, which means that if timely medical intervention had been ensured, he could have been saved,” said a family member waiting outside the mortuary.

Singh’s mother and other relatives were traveling to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh after being informed of his death.

“Arguments in the train are quite common in Mumbai, but who carries a sharp weapon? Our family has lost a son who had his life ahead of him. We hope that the accused is not released so that an example is set that no argument in the train in future can lead to death,” said another family member, adding that Singh had only asked the accused not to hurry while getting off the train as a female passenger was standing in front of him.
